Hunting the Whitetail Rut - By T.R. Michels, Trinity Mountain Outdoors
During the summer bucks don't associate much with the does, and they usually stay near their summer core areas. When they do travel they rarely use the same trails the does do. But, as summer turns to fall, and preferred food sources become available, the bucks will begin to use the same food sources as the does, and they may be seen in the late evening and early morning hours.

Deer in Field White-tailed Deer Management
By T.R. Michels, Trinity Mountain Outdoors - July
By July most of the does should be done fawning. The fawns should be growing and following their mothers some of the time. The bucks are growing racks, and all the deer should be feeding on preferred foods.

By T.R. Michels, Trinity Mountain Outdoors

After spending time with, and talking to, a number of different whitetail hunters, most of them experienced and some of them quite knowledgeable, I realized many of them did not understand the progression of the rut, or the time frame of the rut.

My hunter and I quietly waited as the sky became brighter. After several minutes I heard a gobble, followed immediately by another gobble, and then two more. It sounded like the two toms and two jakes I'd seen last night were still together.

By T.R. Michels, Trinity Mountain Outdoors
Over the years as a guide and writer I've learned that one of the best ways to hunt any animal is to use the right tactics at the right time. In order to do that we have to understand how the animal is acting at the time that we hunt it.

Calling Whitetails
By T.R. Michels, Trinity Mountain Outdoors
The calls that white-tailed deer use fall into five basic categories: Alarm/Distress, Agonistic (aggressive), Maternal/Neonatal (doe/fawn), Mating, and Contact. Alarm/Distress, Agonistic, and Maternal/Neonatal calls have limited use by their very nature.

Turkey Hunting Tips - by TR Michels
1. Spend extra time and effort scouting turkeys before the season. Do not rely on just one tom or flock to hunt, have backup birds to work.
2. Pattern the birds. Know where they roost, feed and strut, and the travel routes they use, so you know where to find them on a regular basis.

During my seven year study of white-tailed I discovered that deer are affected by several meteorological conditions that I call Comfort Factors, that affect daily deer activity. Many of these same factors also affect the health of the deer and can be considered as Security Factors.
