In the summer months, walleyes are very likely to spread out on a variety of structures. They are also very likely, in some bodies of water, to spread out over vast open areas away from structure. They are usually relating to baitfish when they are away from structure.

By Bob Jensen

The summer months are a great time to try to catch a wide variety of fish. In fact, sometimes at this time of year it works better to just go fishing and see what you catch instead of targeting a specific species. If you want to catch a specific specie of fish, you will need to target them.

As we go through the fishing season sometimes our fishing gear gets a little beat up, especially if we're using it as much as we should. Here are some things to keep a watch for as we get farther into the summer months.
walleye THREE-WAYS FOR MORE WALLEYES By Bob Jensen
When some anglers think of "three-ways for more walleyes", they might think "jigging, rigging, and crankbaiting" or something like that. And, although those are three good ways to catch walleyes, in this case we are talking about using three-way swivels on our line to catch more marble-eyed fish.

As a photoluminescent chemist, I didn't realize the level of bio engineering that goes into designing fishing tackle. To say the least, I was surprised when I received a phone call from the engineer at Michigan Stinger requesting technical data.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL FALL FISHING
By Bob Jensen

Some anglers put their fishing rods away right after Labor Day, and I guess that is understandable. Fall offers many outdoor opportunities. There is hunting and football games and all those other family activities, but if you want to catch a truly big fish, you are missing out on that chance if you don't go fishing in the fall.

This is the time of year when some ice-anglers start to wind down their ice-fishing. Although there is still llots of ice-fishing action remaining, for some reason, about this time of year, some anglers decide to hang the rods up for the season and start getting ready for open water.

This is the time of year, in many areas of the Midwest, when fishing slows down for some folks. While it is true that early ice can be very productive, if you hang up the ice-rods and auger now, you're missing some great action...

MID-WINTER WALLEYES
By Bob Jensen

During this period of the ice-fishing season, walleyes can get a little tough to catch for some folks. There are a couple of reasons for this slowing in the action. The primary reason is that too many anglers who have permanent icehouses have been sitting on the same spot for too long.

Fishing for largemouth bass starts at different times in different areas of the Midwest. In some states there is a bass season, in other states we can chase bass year 'round. One of my favorite times to chase bass is in May and June.

CATCH MORE FISH IN RIVERS
By Bob Jensen

The Midwest is home to many, many rivers, both large and small. These rivers are home to a variety of fish, and much of the time, many of those fish are willing to bite. River fish are almost always fighting the current, which means they expend more energy than their cousins who live in lakes.
SLOW DOWN FOR MORE FISH By Bob Jensen
I just returned from an ice-fishing trip to South Dakota. We were on Waubay Lake, a fantastic fishery for really big perch, and lots of them. At times these perch can be very easy to catch, at other times they get a little or a lot finicky.

More and more anglers are getting ready to go fishing in open water. Early in the open water season fishing can be a hot or cold deal. You can be on the water one day catching lots of fish, the next day there seem to be none in the area.

Most gamefish have teeth, but some have really noticeable teeth. In the Midwest, whenever an angler talks about chasing "toothy fish", they are either referring to muskies or northern pike. Fall is a great time for catching both of these "toothy fish".

This huge walleye was caught in April of 2003 on Lake Erie. This pig came in at 14 lbs, 31 inches long and had a 21 inch girth. Three Wisconsin boys picked this one up trolling on the last hour of their four day trip to Lake Erie. I guess this crew had early success with some smaller Walleyes jigging, but chose put in the two (unproductive) days of trolling until they landed this one. Fortunately, they have it all on video too! This one is definitely going on the wall!
