"We were
hunting with friends in Upper Michigan about 45 minutes north/northeast
of Menomonee. I was sitting in a permanent stand, looking toward
Grant but with a view to the opposite direction as well. I was in
the middle of a clearing about 1 to 2 hundred yards long by about
50 or so yards wide. A tree obstructed my view of Grant but I could
see a little to either side of where he was sitting.
I saw 2 does
come bolting out of the woods to the opposite side and thought they
would go across the road and therefore Grant never even knowing
they ran by. For whatever reason they circled back and
one ran right below Grant into the woods, and the other one ran
a little
past him into the clearing and stopped just long enough for Grant
to get a shot off. She was broadside about 20 yards away. He got
the shot off very quick. I did not see the shot, but heard the arrow
release, caught a
glimpse of the doe running into the woods and heard her crashing
in the
under brush. Based on how she took off and crashed through the woods,
I
thought he probably hit her.
I waited a minute
(seemed like 30) and was getting ready to go see him when I heard
him kind of giggling - so I know he hit her. We did not see any
blood and did not want to push her, so we went back to the cottage.
Gary came back a few minutes later and we went to look for her.
At this point it was about an hour later and it was dark. It had
been drizzling all day and continued to do so. Gary picked up a
blood trail about 50 feet into the woods. At that point we were
able to
follow the trail, getting more visible as we went. We found her
about 150
yards from where she was shot. She was laying there with her head
perked
up looking at us. She tried to get up but could not get her legs
under
her, but we did not want to risk it, so we just let her lie and
came back
later. She was dead. Which was good because we half expected to
find her
still alive. We did not find the arrow and did not see the broadhead
in
her. When we got home Grant used his metal detector, but it did
not pick
up any metal, so it appears the arrow somehow worked its way out.
I told Grant
he has to shoot another one this year to prove this wasn't
just a fluke."
