Gobble, Gobble, Gobble...
by Bret Lussow
Ah, that time of year again. Snow melting, tip-ups put away, and the NFL draft right around the corner. You can feel it in the air…the 2003 Turkey Season coming to a section of woods near you.

2003 should be a banner year for Turkeys. George Brzezinski of Wausau reported seeing a grouping of 40-50 Toms and Jakes near his home and in nearly every county these days you can see the fields full of Gobblers ready for the mating season.

Soon these large flocks will be breaking up and the opportunities for Wisconsin Turkey hunters are better than ever.

According to a recent article in Wisconsin Outdoor News, Keith Warnke a DNR upland game ecologist said, "the winter has been mild, and when you look at what dictates good spring turkey hunting, several things are lining up in our favor. We had good productivity in 2002, and in 2001 we had reasonable productivity in most areas and very good productivity in a few locations. So, with mild winters, we should have plenty of turkeys out there."

If you haven't had your share of Spring Deer, Turkey and Fishing shows there is still time to catch the Grand-Daddy of them all, the Wisconsin Deer and Turkey Expo in Madison April 4-6 at the Alliant Energy Center. This show promises to be larger than last year and features new seminar speakers, the DNR "Wall of Shame", and a special display: 5 of the biggest, oddest whitetail antlers you'll ever see.

So dust off your boots, practice your calls, clean your gun, and get out your decoys because 2003 could be your best chance ever. Good Luck and be safe.

After the author wrote this story, he shot this Bearded Hen on April 30, 2003. This one had a 7 inch beard and weighed 14 lbs. He was smiling ear to ear! (even though last year he shot a 21 pounder....A TRUE SPORTSMAN!
