Colorado Elk Hunt is a Test of Perserverance
Tom Cummings and hunting crew took on challenge of bagging high-country big game. Their success came on the last day of the hunt, but it was worth the wait.
As Tom tells the story, we were camped out at 8500 feet in Southwest Colorado, the Temperatures were in the high 70's. It was the last day of hunt and we had not bagged an elk. I said to the crew we have to go higher if we want any success and the next morning I decided I was getting up at 3:00 to go up into the Dark Timber before the sun. My buddies said don't shoot anything small because they were not packing it out from up there.

At 3:00 a.m. I left camp, while the rest went back to sleep for an hour or so. The sun came up just as I reached the dark timber. I set up my gun on the shooting sticks and waited about 20 minutes. Suddenly, I heard crashing coming through the brush and it was a bull. I let him walk directly away from me for a long while waiting for a good shot and a good look at his horns (remembering the lecture the my buddies gave me before I left). As he topped a small ridge and nearly two steps from being out of site, he turned almost broadside and looked back at me. He was a big bull a full rack. The 300 Ultra Mag knocked my hat off before I knew I had squeezed the trigger. He ran across the meadow and for the first time I got a good look at his horns in the sun. When I finally closed my mouth, I fire again and knocked him over. My buddies did not complain about helping me pack out. -tjc
