Campsite: Carbon RiverCarbon River is by far
the most unique campsite of the 9 we stayed. The sites are all well
above the elevation of the trail. Our site was about 80 feet above and
nestled in a large area of deadfall trees. The site had two pads that
were located on different levels. Beware of the ground squirrels,
chipmunks or whatever they are called. They are pretty ingenious and
have learned how to climb the bear poles that are prominent at each site.
One sneaky critter climbed the pole, chewed way through the daypack holding
the food and sampled oatmeal, pita bread and jerky. Luckily he didn't
eat too much. He did s!@# everywhere!
Since we were now veterans of crossing suspension bridges we made it
across this one without having to hold the hand cables. Don't
under-estimate the difficultly of this task. Carbon Glacier is
named after nearby coal deposits.
