Calumet-Keweenaw
Sportsmen's Club sets sights on new building and
shooting sports facilities
The Calumet-Keweenaw
Sportsmen's Club plans to break ground for a new
clubhouse with sporting facilities and services for men, women and
children this summer. The 57-year old club is conducting a membership
drive and
fundraising campaign to begin development and construction.
Through the
philanthropy of Keweenaw natives and long-time Sportsmen's Club
members, Ernie and Edith Niederer, the club now owns a wooded 13-acre
parcel on the Phoenix Farms Road in Keweenaw County.

"The land
acquisition jump starts our dreams and plans for a clubhouse, with
shooting and archery ranges, a fishing pond, nature trails, picnic
and
meeting facilities planned for the future," enthused Ron Racine,
C-K
Sportsmen's
vice president. The Club also envisions planting trees and natural
food plots
to support wildlife.
Development
will begin this summer. The Club's first major fundraiser is a
raffle,
featuring brand name guns, knives, archery and fishing gear. Prizes
include
a 270 Winchester Featherlite rifle, 870 Remington 20-gauge shotgun,
Knight
.50 calibre blackpowder rifle, compound bow, and a rod and reel,
as well as
prizes from Gerber Legendary Blades, Luhr Jensen, Pure Fishing,
Coleman,
Rapala and other national and local supporters.
The drawing
will take place at the club's Gun Show & Sale, August 14-15,
Ahmeek
Fire Hall. The show features 30 tables for exhibitors and vendors,
fun,
games, prizes,
food and refreshments, and a bake sale. Raffle tickets are available
from
club members at $2 each or 6 for $10.
Table rental
for the 2-day gun show is $30. Contact Ron Racine, 337-2799,
ron22ald@up.net, for reservations. Show attendees may also register
for the
NRA Personal Protection in the Home Handgun Course.
"This new
facility will help us grow our active membership and pass along
our fishing, hunting and outdoor heritage and traditions to our
kids and
the next generation," stated Keweenaw Legacy fundraising chairman,
Clarence Fisher. For information or to make a donation, contact
cfish@chartermi.net.
Preliminary
plans for facilities designed to introduce families and kids
to the joys of the outdoors include a stocked fishing pond, on-site
kids
fishing derbies and clinics, flyfishing and fly-tying classes, dog
runs
and training.
Shooting sports
with ranges for NSSF and NRA-certified shooting and hunter
safety
instruction, sporting clays, skeet, trap, pistol, rifle, shotgun
and
archery are also in the planning stages.
Since 1946,
the Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club has been a non-profit
organization of fisher, hunter and conservationist volunteers promoting
ethical
fishing and hunting, and advocating for improved fishing, hunting
and
outdoor recreational opportunities for Keweenaw sportsmen and women.
Through membership
in Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC), U.S.
Sportsmen's Alliance, U.P. Sportsmen's Alliance, Whitetails Unlimited,
and
Michigan United Deer Hunters, the Club extends its strength as an
influential grassroots constituency.
The club holds
a dinner meeting the third Thursday of every month at the
Calumet VFW, U.S. 41 North and Larch Street. Guest speakers address
outdoor issues of interest to local sportsmen and women.
